Discussion: Move Selection

After every competition we have reviewed what happened and strived to incorporate any possible improvements into future events. Previously, this was done informally, but I think the process can be improved by opening the discussion to everyone. This discussion will have three parts:
  • First is move selection (i.e., what moves will be in the competition) and finger selection (i.e., should we add monos.)
  • Second is the proxy system (i.e., what moves give credit for other moves.)
  • Third is scoring (i.e., how many points for each move.)
We will tackle these in order, moving on after each stage is finalized. Please hold proxy and scoring related comments until they are addressed in future posts.

Move Selection

Everyone has their ideal of what a campusing competition should be. Personally, I think the current move list is too long and a top competitor needs to do too many "easy" moves to win. (Currently, a top competitor has to do about 14 sequences.) Also a limited move list makes the competition more approachable to new competitors. I think a properly selected move list and an improved proxy system goes a long way in solving these issues. This is the current move list:
Up Moves Stacks Doubles
1:2-3 1:3-6-8 (1:3-6 & 1:4-6) 2:1-2
1:2-4 1:4-5-8 (1:4-5 & 1:2-5) 2:1-3
1:3-4 1:3-5-7-9 (1:3-5 x3) 3:1-3
1:2-5 1:2-5-6-9 (1:2-5,1:4-5,1:2-5) 2:1-4
1:3-5 1:5-6-9 (1:5-6 & 1:2-5) 4:1-4
1:4-5 1:4-6-9 (1:4-6 & 1:3-6) 2:1-5
1:2-6 1:5-7-9 (1:5-7 & 1:3-5) 5:1-5
1:3-6 1:4-7-9 (1:4-7 & 1:4-6) 2:1-6
1:4-6 1:3-6-9 (1:3-6 & 1:4-7) 6:1-6
1:5-6 1:4-5-9 (1:4-5 & 1:2-6) 2:1-7
1:3-7 1:2-6-9 (1:2-6 & 1:5-8) 7:1-7
1:4-7 1:3-7-9 (1:3-7 & 1:5-7)
1:5-7 1:3-5-9 (1:3-5 & 1:3-7)
1:6-7 1:6-7-9 (1:6-7 & 1:2-4)
1:4-8 1:5-8-9 (1:5-8 & 1:4-5)
1:5-8 1:4-8-9 (1:4-8 & 1:5-6)
1:5-8.5
1:5-9
1:6-9
The changes I propose are:
  1. Add 1:6-8 to the Up Moves.
  2. Remove 1:6-7-9, 1:5-8-9, and 1:4-8-9 from the Stacks.
Here is my reasoning: Regarding 1:6-8, not having it is an obvious flaw and inconsistency. For the stacks, we have too many and the ones I suggest removing end in a simple "shrug" move that is not separating competitors. (The vast majority of people that did the inital move of these stacks did the whole stack.) Also, if we do not remove these and we do add 1:6-8 as an Up Move, then we need to add 1:6-8-9 for consistency (which would total 17 stacks.) These stacks (1:6-7-9, 1:5-8-9, 1:4-8-9, 1:6-8-9) are not what people think of as classic, fun stacks, and they are not separating competitors — so they're just getting in the way. My proposed changes would look like this:
Up Moves Stacks Doubles
1:2-3 1:3-6-8 (1:3-6 & 1:4-6) 2:1-2
1:2-4 1:4-5-8 (1:4-5 & 1:2-5) 2:1-3
1:3-4 1:3-5-7-9 (1:3-5 3 times) 3:1-3
1:2-5 1:2-5-6-9 (1:2-5,1:4-5,1:2-5) 2:1-4
1:3-5 1:5-6-9 (1:5-6 & 1:2-5) 4:1-4
1:4-5 1:4-6-9 (1:4-6 & 1:3-6) 2:1-5
1:2-6 1:5-7-9 (1:5-7 & 1:3-5) 5:1-5
1:3-6 1:4-7-9 (1:4-7 & 1:4-6) 2:1-6
1:4-6 1:3-6-9 (1:3-6 & 1:4-7) 6:1-6
1:5-6 1:4-5-9 (1:4-5 & 1:2-6) 2:1-7
1:3-7 1:2-6-9 (1:2-6 & 1:5-8) 7:1-7
1:4-7 1:3-7-9 (1:3-7 & 1:5-7)
1:5-7 1:3-5-9 (1:3-5 & 1:3-7)
1:6-7
1:4-8
1:5-8
1:6-8
1:5-8.5
1:5-9
1:6-9
As it relates to move selection, please give your feedback in the comment section below or email me if you prefer.

Finger Selection

In the first two competitions, we had 2 and 4 fingering only for the Up Moves. This year we expanded 2 fingering to the Stacks and it was quite popular and inspiring. If we add monos, then we should add it for Up Moves and Stacks. Place your vote to the right.
